Young first choice center-back pairing

Dayot Upamecano is looking likely to be the center-back that could be arriving in Bavaria during the summer transfer window. The French defender’s representatives have held talks with the club, while Bayern also publicly confirmed their interest in the player. Die Roten will have to activate his release clause worth €42.5 million to sign him in the summer.

Upamecano will go straight in the lineup. More than a replacement for Alaba, he is likely to be replacing Boateng in the central defense. The 22-year-old defender will bring all the qualities that Boateng brings on the right side of the central defense.

The young French defender has enough pace to burn, which Boateng currently lacks, while his solid passing and ball carrying ability helps the team to smoothly play out from the back. He does have lapses in concentration, but that weakness can be ironed out with time in the training ground.

Upamecano’s perfect partner is likely to be his compatriot, Lucas Hernandez. The former Atletico Madrid defender will be the left-footed central defender in Flick’s system. Hernandez is much better in the air than Alaba, so that will be added bonus while defending. However, the Frenchman is not as good as the Austrian defender with the ball. Nevertheless, Hernandez and Upamecano look the most complimentary central defensive partnership for Die Roten next season.
