Sticking with a stable back four for a run of games
Flick decided to stick with a fixed starting XI last season and reaped the rewards with consistent performances. He had to heavily rotate the team this season due to a congested schedule and late start to the campaign as a consequence of the pandemic.
Since the team is looking inconsistent now, Flick could do with sticking with at least the same back four to get good performances and results. He has been constantly chopping center-back partnerships to give players game time and avoid the accumulation of fatigue, which is a sensible decision, but a solution to the current problem could throw the rotation policy out of the window.
Benjamin Pavard has been struggling to replicate last season’s form in the right-back position. The Frenchman was probably the most consistent player in the back four. The German manager has publicly backed to return to his best. Flick should try to give him a consistent run to play himself into form.
Niklas Sule and Lucas Hernandez should be getting a run together in the heart of defense since they are the future of the club and likely to be first choice pairing next season. Alphonso Davies will complete the back four by slotting in the left-back position. Giving this group a long run in the team will help to forge better chemistry that will eventually be seen in the defensive performance of the team.
