Move the defensive line a bit deeper

After the defeat against Holstein Kiel, Bastian Schweinsteiger admitted in a post-match analysis show that Die Roten is defending too high and giving the opposition huge amount of space to beat them on the break. On Friday, Hansi Flick admitted that team needs to be more intense off the ball rather than thinking about moving the defensive line deeper.

Flick is absolutely right that the pressing needs to be better, and the team should look to win second and third balls. However, this is a unique season where players have been playing a game every three days. The accumulation of fatigue will lead to a drop in the intensity of pressing. In such a situation, moving the defensive line a bit deeper would be a far more sensible idea.

Flick will be reluctant to use this approach after enjoying a lot of success with a high line defense last season. However, great coaches adapt to circumstances and get the best out of the team by tweaking the approach.

A deeper defensive line will give our center-backs some sort of relief as they will not be vulnerable to waves of counterattacks. The level of domination by Bayern in games might reduce, but they will boost the chances of getting consistent wins right now.
