Bayern Munich: Four things to watch out for in 2021
Will Lewandowski break Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record?
2020 was the year of Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker enjoyed personal and team accolades throughout the year. He was voted FIFA and UEFA player of the year but missed out on Ballon d’Or since France Football cancelled the event due to the pandemic.
The Polish striker scored an outstanding 55 goals across all competitions last season. In the Bundesliga, Lewandowski was found his name 35 times on the scoresheet. He did lose the European golden boot award to Ciro Immobile. The Pole also missed out on breaking Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record of scoring maximum goals in a season by five goals.
In the Hinrunde, Lewandowski is currently averaging more than a goal in every league game. The 32-year-old striker is currently on 17 goals in 12 appearances. Since this season is unique due to the pandemic, the second half of the season will have 21 games instead of 17. Lewandowski should be the favourite to break Muller’s record of 40 goals. The Polish striker has maintained peak fitness ever since joining Die Roten, but his workload needs to be managed now to avoid burnout by the end of the season. Hansi Flick has given rest to Lewandowski in a couple of league games this season, so the talismanic striker may not get all 21 games to score 24 goals to break the record. There are many things for and against Lewandowski to achieve this unique feat, making it an intriguing second half of the season for him.
