Germany suffer embarrassment during international break

What could have been a solid international break turned out to be an absolute nightmare after the 6-0 defeat against Spain. Joachim Low’s men looked hapless against Spain as they dominated the game after a dodgy start. Manuel Neuer looked helpless in the goal, while Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane were very well contained by the Spanish side. Leon Goretzka and Niklas Sule had a night to remember. The latter was substituted at half time due to a minor injury.

Earlier in the international break, Sane had shone for Germany against Ukraine. He scored the equalizer after the former World Champions went behind early in the game. Leon Goretzka was also in fine form during that game as he bagged two assists.

Neuer and Sule couldn’t get a clean sheet against Ukraine, but they did their jobs well for the major part of the game. Gnabry couldn’t find the back of the net during this international break, but his linkup play was impressive against Ukraine. He did hit the crossbar against Spain, which was the only threatening shot from Germany on that night.

In the friendly game against Czech Republic last week, all Bayern players were rested. Germany failed to qualify for the knockout phase of the Nations League. The result against Spain was poor, but the lack of fight and structure on the pitch would be more concerning for Low. The German players from Bayern did well in patches during the break. However, the defeat against Spain will be stinging them when they return to Munich.
