Bayern Munich: Takeaways from smashing win against Atletico Madrid
Lucas Hernandez continues to get better
Hansi Flick wants to protect Alphonso Davies from burning out after a breakthrough campaign last year. His decision to ease him into the team this season has been helped by the consistent performances of Lucas Hernandez.
The German manager decided to go with Hernandez in the left-back position against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. Hernandez repaid the faith of his manager with a near-flawless performance at Allianz Arena. He was aggressive with defending, making one interception, and four blocks. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
Hernandez was also showing his passing by switching the flank through long balls. He was making inside runs that was freeing up space for Goretzka and Tolisso around the box. Hernandez does need to improve his crossing and passing in the box. Despite these two rough edges of his game, Hernandez is steadily improving his performance.
It was a difficult debut campaign for the Frenchman in Bavaria as he suffered injuries. The good form of Jerome Boateng and David Alaba limited Hernandez’s time in central defense, while Davies secured the left-back position in the lineup. The French international is determined to have a strong second season. If he maintains this consistency, then Flick is going to have a good selection dilemma soon.
