Leon Goretzka developing into a complete midfielder
Since Joshua Kimmich decided to stay in Munich due to personal reasons, Flick decided to field the midfield pairing of Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso. The former was playing in a deeper role, while the latter was playing as a box to box midfielder.
When Goretzka arrived in Bavaria from Schalke, he had the reputation of playing as an attacking midfielder that can score frequently by arriving late in the box. In the past eight to ten months, Flick has managed to convert him into a complete midfielder.
On Saturday, Goretzka did a splendid job in the number six position. His passing was not as expansive as Kimmich, but he kept the play ticking by finding the attacking players. Goretzka is also able to outmuscle opposition to win aerial and ground duels.
Despite adding these important facets to his game, Goretzka still has the knack for scoring goals by timing his runs in the box. Under Flick, the German midfielder has become a vital player that can play in any role in the midfield. He is a player that every coach would like to have in his team. The good news for Bavarians is that he is going to get even better as he is approaching the peak of his career.
