Bayern Munich picked up where they left off in the Bundesliga with a dominant performance.

Manager Rating

Hansi Flick—9/10

Bayern Munich were always going to be favorites to win this opening fixture of the 2020/21 season. As long as Flick came away with three points there was going to be little criticism from Bayern Munich’s performance. It appears Flick has this team up and running since their UEFA Champions League triumph. They showed no signs of a dip in form following their brief offseason. He has this club ready to chase more titles.

Player Ratings

GK, Manuel Neuer—9/10

There was little for Neuer to do in this match. Schalke only managed to produce five shots with only one being on goal. He did get called into action early in the match when he came out to stop a long pass from reaching its target in the 11th minute. Aside from that moment, he rarely touched the ball. There will be more tough tests to come for Neuer this season but this was not one of them.

CB, Niklas Süle—8/10

With no David Alaba in the lineup, Süle stepped in to take his spot in the starting XI. The German center back produced a very good performance and even got forward for a few scoring opportunities from set-pieces. Süle finished with one interception and three clearances.

CB, Jerome Boateng—8/10

After leaving the Champions League final with an injury, Boateng returned to action for the first time since that moment. He didn’t appear to lose much fitness as he displayed his usual tough defending. Boateng made a great defensive slide tackle in the 13th minute to stop Rabbi Matondo from getting a scoring opportunity. Overall, the Bayern backline looks to be in good shape entering this season.

RB, Benjamin Pavard—7/10

It was a good first appearance for Pavard at right back. The Frenchman completed 89% of his passes and had three interceptions. He helped keep Schalke at bay and played a part in the clean sheet effort for Neuer.

LB, Lucas Hernandez—7/10

Hernandez stepped in to replace Alphonso Davies in the starting XI. He drew three fouls and produced five crosses. The 24-year-old left-back displayed the terrific depth Bayern have available in the squad. When Davies is not available, they have a very good second option in Hernandez.
