Number tens have contrasting campaigns at Bayern Munich

Thomas Muller — 9/10

At one point during the season, Thomas Muller leaving Bayern was more than a possibility. Until November, the German forward was struggling to get regular playing time under Niko Kovac. He was reportedly contemplating a move away from the club. However, things panned out differently as the season progressed.

After Kovac’s departure in November, Muller was brought back in the lineup by Hansi Flick. The German forward went from strength to strength from that point, become the chief creator in the team. Muller is not the most aesthetically number ten, but he can be considered as the most effective number ten in the world.

Other forwards in the team would definitely love playing with Muller. His clever movement and incisive passing help in creating space for them. Muller also epitomizes Bayern’s intense pressing style of play as he relentlessly leads the pressing from the front.

The German forward ended the campaign with 14 goals and 23 assists across all competitions, his best campaign since 2016. Muller also holds the record of having most assists in a single Bundesliga campaign. His return to form is symbolic of Bayern’s campaign, both recovered from earlier setbacks to enjoy a historic season. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)

Philippe Coutinho — 7/10

Philippe Coutinho arrived with high expectations at Bayern after they failed to sign Leroy Sane. He enjoyed his most productive campaign and won all big trophies, but his entire stint was a tad disappointing. The Brazilian was confident about becoming an important player for the club, but things didn’t go according to the plan for him.

Under Kovac, he enjoyed a good run in the starting XI. He impressed during this run. However, Kovac’s departure spelled an end to his stint in the first team. Muller became the first choice number ten, and the rest is history. Coutinho will still see his time at Bayern due to some good memories, but his solitary campaign at the club could be considered as average. He was a top professional and will be fondly remembered by the club and fans.
