Joshua Kimmich — 9/10

Last summer, Bayern Munich couldn’t complete a deal for number six. The German champions decided to move Kimmich in the midfield after Benjamin Pavard arrived at the club. Kimmich has always expressed his desire to play in midfield. He was finally getting the opportunity due to circumstances.

Kimmich showed throughout the campaign why he always wanted in the midfield. The German international provided balance to the lineup and shielded the back four through his astute positioning. He also boasts a complete passing range, allowing him to dictate the flow of the game.

The German midfielder also has a knack of scoring goals in big games. Kimmich’s role was often tweaked in European games. He had to slot in the right-back position during the Champions League knockout games due to an injury to Pavard. His performances remained consistent, which is the hallmark of one of the best midfielders in Europe.

Leon Goretzka — 8/10

The season started on a wrong note for Goretzka as he suffered an injury. During the first international break, he suffered another injury setback, keeping him out of action for a month. Goretzka took some time to get back his best form after returning from injury.

Goretzka was used as a number ten when there were injuries in the attack. The German international is not the most aesthetically pleasing midfielder, but he provides something different with his late runs in the box.

After all wide players were fit, Goretzka was used in a deeper role by Hansi Flick. He excelled in that role- keeping things simple and passing the ball to more creative midfielders. The German midfielder also improved physically to impose himself in the duels. Often, he dropped in the defense to cover for the likes of Jerome Boateng and David Alaba. The goals dried up, but he formed a solid partnership with Kimmich in the center of the park. There is much more to come from Goretzka despite enjoying a satisfactory campaign.
