Bayern Munich defenders endure mixed season- Player Grades
Frustrating season for few defenders
Lucas Hernandez – 6/10
It has been a frustrating season for Lucas Hernandez. The Frenchman moved to Bavaria for a club-record fee last summer, but injuries have curtailed his progress in Munich. Hernandez has spent a lot of time on the sidelines during his debut campaign in Bavarian colours. His performances have been fine, but fitness has been the concern. At the moment, he is not the first-choice option in the left-back and center-back position. The German champions are determined to stick with him as he faces an uphill task to get back in the starting XI.
Alvaro Odriozola – 6/10
Flick wanted a cover for Pavard in January, so Die Roten decided to sign Alvaro Odriozola from Real Madrid on a six-month loan deal. However, the loan move didn’t go well for the Spaniard. He struggled to get minutes on the pitch, managing only two starts across all competitions. Odriozola does leave the club with three trophies, but his contribution on the pitch was not at all significant.
Niklas Sule – 6/10
Sule had started the campaign well as he wanted to become the leader at the back after the departure of Hummels. However, his season came to an extended halt in October when he suffered a serious knee injury. The German defender spent ten months out on the sidelines. He returned to action during the knockout stages of the Champions League. Sule is surely Flick’s preferred option over Hernandez to partner Alaba since he came on in the final against PSG to replace Boateng in the first half. It was a disappointing campaign for Sule, but he will have a big role to play next season.
