Player grades for the defensive players at Bayern Munich during the 2019/20 campaign.

Bayern Munich enjoyed another treble win after enduring a difficult start to the season under Niko Kovac. However, Hansi Flick helped the club in completing a big turnaround after getting the job in November when Kovac parted ways with the club.

Under the Croatian manager, Die Roten were struggling to keep clean sheets. The defensive organization was all over the place as the team consistently conceded cheap goals. This could be down the to change in personnel as Mats Hummels left for Borussia Dortmund last summer, while Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard were adapting to the new environment.

When Flick took over, there was an injury crisis at the back. He tweaked the back four and relied on this group of defenders to play every game. With consistent playing time under their belt, the group developed strong chemistry and made them a difficult team to beat.

Along with Flick’s tactical tweaks, credit should also be given to the individuals in the defense. Many players took their game to the next level under his guidance. Let us have a brief look at how every player fared in the defense for the European Champions.
