Bayern Munich: Road to the final in the Champions League
Battering Chelsea across two legs
After a perfect group stage, Die Roten were drawn against Chelsea in the round of 16. The German champions last faced Chelsea in the finals of the Champions League in 2012 at Allianz Arena. Bayern were on the wrong side of the result on that day as Chelsea won the final on penalties.
However, this season the outcome of this knockout tie was a one-sided affair. The German champions travelled to Stamford Bridge in February. Flick’s men were dominant from kick-off, controlling the game on the hostile pitch. A brace from Gnabry and a solitary goal from Robert Lewandowski was enough to clinch a comfortable 3-0 win against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side.

Football came to a halt after the first leg due to coronavirus pandemic. The second leg against Chelsea was indefinitely postponed. Lewandowski was set to miss the second leg due to injury, but the break allowed him to be fit for the reverse fixture.
UEFA decided to play the second leg in August and then move the competition to Lisbon that involved single-leg knockout games. Chelsea had slim hopes of making a turnaround, which was quickly extinguished in the first half of the leg. Die Roten went onto clinch a 4-1 win at empty Allianz Arena, winning the tie with an emphatic 7-1 scoreline.
