A perfect record in the group stage

Die Roten was handed a fairly good group as they were drawn against Tottenham Hotspurs, Red Star Belgrade, and Olympiakos. The German champions began their European campaign in September last year with a 3-0 win against Red Star Belgrade at Allianz Arena.

In the second round, Bayern travelled to London to face last season’s runners-up. It was expected to be a tight game, but the finishing from the German club in this game was astonishing as they slotted seven goals past Hugo Lloris. Serge Gnabry was the top scorer in the game with four goals.

After London, Die Roten visited Greece to face Olympiakos. It was a close game in a fantastic atmosphere as the German club claimed a narrow 3-2 win. This game was the last European game for Kovac as Bayern manager. He parted ways with Rekordmeister at the start of November.

The return leg against Olympiakos was Flick’s first game in the dugout. It was not a pretty performance as they had to work hard to get a 2-0 win. The final two group games were also comfortable victories as Spurs suffered 3-1 defeat at Allianz Arena, while away game in Belgrade ended in 6-0 win. Die Roten ended the group campaign with six wins, a perfect record making them early favourites for the tournament.
