Bayern Munich show grit and resolve in the victory against Olympique Lyon.

Manager Rating

Hansi Flick — 8/10

Flick got all decisions right for Bayern Munich against Lyon. He would ideally like Die Roten to be compact defensively since they conceded a lot of chances against Lyon. His game management was also spot-on as every substitute had a positive impact on the game.

Player Ratings

GK, Manuel Neuer — 9/10

Neuer has slowly regained back his world-class form after a couple of tough years due to injuries. Big players deliver at the biggest stage, just like Neuer did against Lyon. The German goalkeeper was superb with the saves he made in the first half to deny the French club an early lead. In the second half, he denied Karl Toko Ekambi on two occasions to keep the game out of reach for Lyon. His long throws also helped Die Roten in initiating two dangerous moves in either half. A world-class performance from the German international.

DEF, Joshua Kimmich — 8/10

Joshua Kimmich was a threat on the right side of the defense. His output in the final third from this position is remarkable. The German played a pinpoint pass to find Gnabry for the first goal. Late in the game, Kimmich grabbed another assist by delivering an accurate cross from the corner. Defensively, Kimmich was astute, keeping up with the runners on the flank.

DEF, Jerome Boateng — 6.5/10

Boateng struggled in the second game in a row as Lyon looked threatening in the final third. The German defender’s lack of pace doesn’t help the team. Flick did admit that Boateng had a muscular problem at half time, but it wouldn’t be a big surprise that it was a tactical substitution since the former German international was below par in the first half.

DEF, David Alaba — 7.5/10

Alaba showed against Lyon why it is important that the German club extends his contract. The Austrian struggled with Lyon’s attack initially, but recovered quickly and delivered a brilliant performance. He was in the right position to make crucial blocks and interceptions in the final third. Moreover, his passing allowed Die Roten to play out from tight situations.

DEF, Alphonso Davies — 7.5/10

Davies had yet another promising performance at the biggest stage in European football. The young full-back used his pace to track runners and remain ahead of them on the break. He was not heavily involved in the final third as he was against Barcelona, but it was still a perfect performance one would expect from the full-back in a tense European game.
