Bayern Munich: Top five success stories of the season
Thomas Muller- Resurgence under Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich
Back in October, there were murmurs in Germany that Thomas Muller is contemplating a move away from Bayern. After spending more than ten seasons at the club, the German forward was frustrated with lack of playing time under Kovac. Muller also remained tight-lipped about his career.
However, destiny had something different written for Muller. He got the chance to impress after Kovac’s departure. The German grabbed this opportunity with both hands, becoming a vital cog in Flick’s well oiled first team at Bayern.
Muller has been on a steady decline since the departure of Pep Guardiola in 2016. The German club brought James Rodriguez and Philippe Coutinho in the past few seasons to provide the magic in the number ten role. Muller is set to outlast both of them after reinventing himself as the creative spark under Flick. He signed a new contract in April that will see him stay at the club till 2023.
The former German international broke the Bundesliga record for most assists in a season by creating 21 goals this term. He epitomises the philosophy of Flick, pressing relentlessly throughout the game and dominate the oppositions. From being close to leaving the club to becoming one of the best number tens in Europe, Muller completed a remarkable turnaround this season.
