Bayern Munich: Top five success stories of the season
Alphonso Davies- Biggest success story of the year for Bayern Munich
When Bayern had beaten competition from various top clubs to sign Alphonso Davies from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018, nobody expected the teenage attacking talent to become a mainstay in defence for the German club. Davies has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in Bavarian colours in the most unlikely position.
The Canadian winger started the campaign while playing for reserves. However, an injury crisis in defence forced Kovac to deploy Davies in the left-back position. Initially, it looked like a temporary move, but the 19-year-old forward went strength to strength with every passing game.
Davies ended the campaign with 29 Bundesliga appearances, contributing to eight goals. The club decided to reward his performances with a new contract. With speculation surrounding the future of David Alaba, Davies could become Die Roten’s left-back for next decade. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
The 19-year-old winger improved the defensive side of the game as his positioning is much better now compared to when he started playing in this role. In the final third, he is much more composed now. With more experience under his belt, there is no doubt that Davies can go on to become a top player. He has been one of the biggest and surprising success stories of the season, landing the rookie of the year award in the Bundesliga.
