Midfielders showed grit and determination

MID, Joshua Kimmich — 7.5/10

Joshua Kimmich started in the center of the park after being rested against Wolfsburg last weekend. The German midfielder would have liked to dictate the play in a better way than he did against Leverkusen. However, his work ethic was second to none, fighting hard for every ball and pressing aggressively when Die Roten lost the ball. The German international played a cute pass to send Serge Gnabry away for the team’s second goal. It was not a typical performance from Kimmich, but he still stood out in the center of the park.

MID, Leon Goretzka — 7/10

Leon Goretzka continues to get better with every passing game in the center midfield role. He was supporting the attack while going forward by linking up with wide players and Thomas Muller. Goretzka’s passing remains conservative, but that can be improved with time. His late runs in the box helped Die Roten to unsettle Leverkusen’s back four. With growing uncertainty surrounding the future of Thiago Alcantara, Goretzka may become the first-choice midfield option next season. His performances over the past couple of months are impressive as he kept the play ticking for Die Roten against Leverkusen.
