Standout Players for Bayern Munich

There were three players from this match that had standout performances and are worthy of recognition. The first is Kingsley Coman. Over the past two seasons, many fans and pundits would have put Serge Gnabry over Coman in the pecking order for Bayern, but since the restart of play, Coman has greatly outplayed his German counterpart.

Part of that is due to Gnabry’s abysmal form, but in this match, Coman was exceptional. His pace and dribbling skills were on full display. He was rewarded with both a goal and an assist. He did miss a sitter in the second half, but apart from that moment, it was a great performance from the Frenchman. If Leroy Sane does arrive at the club in summer, then it should be Coman and not Gnabry, who starts on the right flank.

Another player was Mickael Cuisance. The young French midfielder was replacing Joshua Kimmich in the double pivot alongside Leon Goretzka and performed the role to perfection. He was all over the pitch and helped link the defense to attack while also dominating the middle of the pitch. His goal in the 37th minute was stunning. He cut inside from the right outside of the box and unleashed a rocket of a shot that no keeper could save.

Later in the game, it was his dribbling in the box that drew the penalty for Lewandowski. It was very telling that when Hansi Flick subbed on Joshua Kimmich, it was Goretzka and not Cuisance that got taken off. The last few matches have been very telling about how far Cuisance has come in his development. He looks stronger and more confident on the ball and looks to be a Bayern player for a long time to come.

And of course, the best player on the pitch in this match was Thomas Muller. Anyone who has watched Bayern before and after Hansi Flick took over knows that the German has been a man renewed. He started the match with an assist to Coman which took his Bundesliga tally to 21 on the season. That number is a record for the Bundesliga, edging out Kevin de Bruyne’s old record.

To round of a good performance, Muller scored a goal late in the second half. Running into the back post on a cross by Ivan Perisic, the ball got deflected by a defender into the path of Muller, who powerfully slotted it home into the back of the net. Hopefully, Muller can have this kind of impact in the DFB Pokal final and the Champions League.
