Consistent team selection for Bayern Munich

When Flick was given the reins of the first team, Die Roten were struggling in the league by their high standards. The German manager’s first job was to get his strongest team out there in every game and build team chemistry by keeping intact the spine of the squad.

Manuel Neuer and David Alaba were constants in defense, while Joshua Kimmich was the midfield general. Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski were the key men in the attack. These five players formed the spine of the starting XI and played almost every game together since Flick became the first team manager.

Along with these five players, other pieces of the puzzle slowly gained consistency, allowing Flick to field the same team for multiple games in a row. Consistency in selection showed great improvement in the performances of the team. Players also reacted positively to Flick’s team selection by forming strong partnerships in various zones across the pitch.

Flick has benefitted from this approach, but he will have to find a way to introduce rotation in the squad to allow the right amount of competition between players. Keeping the last eight months in isolation, a consistent team selection has played a major role in helping the team to remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga since mid-December, dropping points in only one game.
