Three key battles as Bayern Munich face Eintracht Frankfurt in DFB Pokal

Jerome Boateng vs Bas Dost
While 3-4-3 may be given preference by Adi Hutter for this tie, I foresee Bas Dost being picked ahead of Daichi Kamada and Mijat Gacinovic in a 3-5-2 setup. Dost’s selection here provides an effective tactical solution for Eintracht. In response to Bayern’s possession-based approach, Adi Hutter will likely use a medium/low block in the defensive phase. They will attempt to lure Bayern in their half and win possession with the intention of charging forward on counter-attacks.
In this setup, the flanks will be the preferred route for initiating such moves. This is where Dost’s role shall come into play. Using his stature and ball-holding ability, the Dutch forward can operate as a link-up option. Moreover, he can be a lethal weapon should an opportunity arise against Bayern’s defensive transition. One long-ball in his path surpassing Bayern’s high line and Bas Dost can use his aerial ability to launch an attack.
This is where Hansi Flick shall select Jerome Boateng in the center-back role. Lucas Hernandez should be rested for Bayern’s next vital fixture against Borussia Monchengladbach. Boateng has been in fine form lately. Bayern have kept five clean sheets in their last seven league games. Jerome Boateng started in four of those fixtures, taking Manuel Neuer closer to his golden glove.
The veteran center-half has made eight interceptions in his last three starts. His aerial dual success of 80% in the same outings provides a case for his selection. While Dost’s speed shall not be a problem, Boateng must be wary of crosses being supplied from the wide areas. (Note: The stats in this article are sourced from fbref.com and Understat.com)
