Rewind: Matchday 10 – Bayern Munich exploited Eintracht’s right flank

Adi Hutter used Da Costa to provide overlapping support from the right-hand side. The 26-year old’s prime duties involved adding width during the attack and restoring a four-man defensive shape when out of possession. It was an apt task given to a man with high stamina. 36% of Eintracht’s attacks originated from the right-wing.

Danny Da Costa clocked an expected assists tally of one as he delivered five key passes of which one was converted. The Eagles used their numerical advantage to overload the center and left-half space to create room on the right-side. This is where Da Costa was found sneaking in from behind. The rest of the action was switching the ball to Da Costa’s zone and flood the box to connect with a cross. What a day for Adi Hutter to pick a center-forward pair of Bas Dost and Paciencia.

While Eintracht used their right-side with aplomb, there were certain downsides to it. Bayern found a lot of space in this region. With Da Costa given a large patch to cover, Davies had more room to collect the ball and drive forward.

Gnabry and Lewandowski, particularly, were sharp in their zones. The duo played 19 passes while being pressed from their opponents. They absorbed pressure from David Abraham and Da Costa. This created space for Davies to use his speed and carry the ball with fewer obstacles. The Canadian also provided an assist to Lewandowski’s goal. In terms of moving the ball, Davies covered 293 yards while carrying the ball progressively. This was the highest progressive carry distance amongst all the players recorded that day at the Commerzbank Arena.
