Bayern Munich: Top five center-backs to don Bavarian colours
Daniel Van Buyten
Apart from Boateng and Dante, Daniel Van Buyten also played a big role in the treble-winning campaign in 2013. The Belgian defender was the most experienced center-back in the squad, coming up with big performances throughout the season.
The treble season was Buyten’s second last year at the club. He got the big move to Bavaria in 2006 after delivering impressive performances at Hamburg. The Belgian international was deployed straight into the starting lineup to partner Lucio in central defense.
Buyten’s career in Bavaria can be divided into two parts. In the initial five campaigns, he was part of the spine of the team, amassing a consistent number of appearances every season. The team went through a tough phase during this time, but still, the club managed to win two league titles. Buyten was also part of the team that finished as runner’s up in the Champions League during 2009/10.
The Belgian defender was a cultured center-back, having a good blend of physical prowess and expansive passing range in his locker. His no-nonsense approach to defending helped Die Roten to set the tone of the games. During his seven-year stay at the club, Buyten made 239 appearances across all competitions. The Belgian may not have a longer career than other defenders in this list, but his consistency sets him apart from other center-backs to play for Die Roten. (Stats courtesy- Transfermarkt)
