Jupp Heynckes’ best games at Bayern Munich in treble season
Clinching CL title against archrivals
Nothing gets better than beating your arch-rivals for the biggest trophy in club football. Bayern Munich managed to do that when they faced Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium on 25th May 2013. The rivalry between two teams had increased after Dortmund’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp in the past few seasons.
This game between two teams was a tense affair, similar to their two league encounters that season. After a goalless first half, Die Roten went ahead at the hour mark, courtesy of a poacher’s goal from Mario Mandzukic. Dortmund got back into the game seven minutes when Dante fouled Marco Reus in the box. Ilkay Gundogan calmly slotted the penalty, setting up the game for a grand finale.
As the clock was ticking towards the final whistle, it was pretty much certain that the game was going into extra time. Arjen Robben had other ideas as he showed great awareness to pounce on a loose ball in Dortmund’s box and brush it towards the goal, scoring the winner.
After suffering a painful defeat at Allianz Arena just 12 months ago, Heynckes lifted the title at the Wembley stadium. This was his first CL win with Bayern and overall, second European win in his career. He went on to win the FIFA’s best coach of the year in 2013.
To get his players fighting for the trophy after a heartbreaking loss in the previous campaign showed what a tremendous coach Heynckes was. His man-management skills accompanied with astute tactical acumen made him one of the greatest managers in the game.
