Bayern Munich: Five best managers in club’s history
Louis Van Gaal
After Jurgen Klinsmann’s departure in 2009, Bayern appointed Heynckes as interim manager. When the German manager left to join Bayer Leverkusen, Die Roten decided to appoint Louis Van Gaal as their new manager.
The Dutchman had tasted success in the Netherlands and Spain. He was fondly remembered at his previous clubs for implementing possession-based football. Van Gaal also had a great track record of integration youth players in the first team.
Van Gaal managed to build a solid core of the team that went on to win the treble in 2013. He brought Arjen Robben from Real Madrid in 2009. The Dutchman also moved Bastian Schweinsteiger into midfield, which eventually turned out to be a masterstroke. Schweinsteiger went on to become an accomplished box to box midfielder for Germany and Bayern.
The Dutch manager also integrated Thomas Muller in the first team and made David Alaba as the key member of the first team. All these minute positional changes and deploying youth players in the first team helped Bayern to become a strong team in Europe.
Van Gaal managed to win Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and DFL Supercup during his two-year spell at the club. He also guided the team to the Champions League final in the 2009/10 season, where they suffered defeat against Inter Milan. The trophy cabinet was filled with trophies under Van Gaal, but he managed to build a team that went on to achieve a lot of success in the last decade.
