Alphonso Davies

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Due to an injury crisis in defense, Bayern decided to move David Alaba in central defense and deploy Alphonso Davies in the left-back position. This minute change has turned out to be a masterstroke for Die Roten.

The Canadian winger was erratic in the attack during games he played in Hinrunde. He was astute defensively but lacked composure in the final third to deliver a threatening ball in the box. However, Davies has taken giant steps towards becoming a reliable full-back in Ruckrunde.

Davies has played every game in 2020, and his performances have been consistent throughout 11 games Bayern have played till March. Davies has helped the team in keeping seven clean sheets during this run, and also provided three assists. The most notable assist came against Chelsea, where he showed his pace and intelligence while setting up the goal for Robert Lewandowski. (Stats Courtesy: Whoscored)

The 19-year-old winger would like to play as a forward for Die Roten, but his stellar performances as left-back may have altered club’s plans for him. Bayern has moved quickly to secure his future as Davies penned a new contract on Tuesday. He has been a consistent player for Rekordmeister in 2020. The club will be hoping that he becomes an important player for the club on a long-term basis.
