Philipp Lahm
Bayern has been incredibly lucky in earthing a couple of top full-backs from their academy. Philipp Lahm is one of these full-backs that came through the academy and went on to become one of the best right-backs of his generation.
Lahm was able to operate on the left and right side of the defense, but he played as a right-back for the majority of his career in the right-back position. After a successful loan spell at VfB Stuttgart from 2003 till 2005, Lahm returned to Munich to fight for a place in the starting XI. He went on to make 517 appearances for Die Roten during his 11-year stay at the club. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)
The German full-back was an astute defender. He was not a physically robust defender, but his clever positioning always made him a tough opponent for wingers. Apart from being a strong technical player, Lahm also boasted an exceptionally good fitness record, allowing him to play on an average of 40 games every season.
After Pep Guardiola arrived at the club, Lahm also played in the defensive midfield position. The Spanish manager admitted that Lahm was one of the most intelligent players he has managed in his career. Lahm also became a leader in the dressing room and helped Die Roten to win numerous trophies during his time at the club.
It was a shock for Bavarians when he announced retirement in 2018 as the German was showing no signs of slowing down. Along with going down as a top full-back in European football, Lahm will also be considered as one of the best players to ever play for Rekordmeister.
