Jerome Boateng

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. In a season where he was initially struggling to get playing time, Jerome Boateng ended up playing his best football in the past few seasons. The German defender came to Die Roten’s rescue when Javi Martinez, Hernandez, and Sule were sidelined with injuries.

The German defender took extra efforts to make sure that he is in top shape to play under Flick after the winter break. He came back strongly and delivered top performances in the heart of the defense. Hansi Salihamidzic heaped praise on Boateng after his consistent performances since winter break.

Flick started Boateng against Chelsea in February. The 31-year-old defender didn’t disappoint and kept Olivier Giroud quiet throughout the game. He has looked less vulnerable against fast forwards. Flick moved the defensive line a few yards behind, allowing Boateng to play to his strengths. The former German international also eradicated errors from his game with consistent playing time.

It is highly likely that Boateng will end up leaving Bavaria in summer, but his contribution this season should not go unnoticed. Despite being on the fringes for most of the first half of the season, he managed to deliver when his team needed him the most.
