Manuel Neuer
There is a growing debate around the goalkeeping position at Bayern Munich. Die Roten moved swiftly in January to secure the signing of Alexander Nubel from Schalke. The arrival of Nubel has led to speculation around the future of Manuel Neuer at the club.
Ignoring all the debates about how Die Roten will manage two good goalkeepers, there needs to be more focus on Neuer’s performances this season. Neuer struggled with injuries during the 2017/18 season. His return didn’t go well as he committed errors in the 2018 World Cup.
The 2018/19 campaign did not live up to Neuer’s high standards. He did have a 42.3 % save ratio but ended the campaign with only 11 clean sheets. Moreover, he also committed some uncharacteristic errors throughout the campaign. (Stats Courtesy: Transfermarkt)
Neuer has responded emphatically to a poor individual campaign. This year his errors have decreased. With nine games left to play in the league, the German has already collected ten clean sheets. He saved Bayern from embarrassment on numerous occasions during a tough first half of the season. The German goalkeeper has rediscovered his golden touch and looks certain to have a much longer career at the top level than some expected after an average 2018/19 season.
