Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng has been a part of a transfer saga that has been going on for the past two summer transfer windows. This year could finally see a conclusion to this saga as Boateng enters the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich.

Boateng was heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2018. The German defender had reportedly given the nod to this transfer, but two clubs couldn’t reach an agreement regarding the transfer fee. The French club didn’t come back for Boateng last summer, but Juventus did show tentative interest in the defender. However, the transfer didn’t materialize, and Boateng ended up staying at the club.

The German defender struggled for playing time at the start of the season. An injury crisis in defense and arrival of Hansi Flick helped Boateng to become a regular player for Die Roten. His performances also significantly improved as Bayern crawled back in the title race and regained the top spot in the league.

These performances from Boateng doesn’t mean he should be handed a new deal. Bayern will be looking at the bigger picture. The club will rely on Pavard, Hernandez, and Sule to be center-back options next season. Boateng is entering the twilight years of his career, so a move away from the club will benefit all parties.
