Bayern’s Midfield Continues to Impress

When Thiago Alcantara is in mood, he truly is one of the best midfielders in the world, and performance against Augsburg continued to prove that. Combine that with the ever consistent Joshua Kimmich, Bayern maybe have the best midfield pairing in the world. When the attack isn’t playing particularly well, you need a midfield to steady the ship and keep the pressure on. This is what these guys did in this match. It’s even more incredible to think about having Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso on the bench. Goretzka getting the goal at the end of the match was the icing on the cake.

Bayern needed this performance from the two starters. Thiago dictating the tempo in a more central role, and Kimmich being the defensive rock. Augsburg had a hard time getting through the midfield and often reverted to playing long balls over the top that Jerome Boateng and David Alaba cleaned up easily. Thiago was doing tricks and was able to control balls beautifully. This performance helped the midfield duo to continue their good form. The midfield performance was further enhanced by the introduction of Goretzka.

Next week is Union Berlin, and Hansi Flick will have a decision to make on whether to rest his two star midfield players. They have played a lot over the last few months, and as the Bayern schedule gets more and more congested, rotating the squad will become more and more important. The team will get a week before their next match, so there will be some time for rest. Goretzka has looked very good when he has played, and Corentin Tolisso is a very good midfielder as well. Also, Javi Martinez made his return from injury and will want some more minutes to get back into match shape. Bayern’s midfield is in a good place and will look to maintain its high standards.
