Top five Bayern Munich midfielders of the century
Toni Kroos
Some eyebrows will be raised after seeing Toni Kroos on this list. His departure from Bavaria in 2014 disappointed many Bayern fans, but his contribution at Bayern cannot be downplayed due to his transfer to Real Madrid.
After a solid loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen, Kroos returned to Bayern in 2010. He slowly established himself into the starting lineup by delivering impressive performances in different midfield roles. Kroos could operate as number six, eight, and ten. His passing range allowed him to excel in all three positions.
Kroos flourished as a number ten during Bayern’s treble-winning campaign. He became the perfect link between midfield and attack. Most importantly, there was a consistency in his performances and he hardly dropped below a satisfactory level. This special trait of Kroos helped Bayern to conquer Germany and Europe.
Even under Pep Guardiola, Kroos was able to shine for Bayern. His playing style made sure that he can excel in the possession and counter-attacking philosophies. Kroos went on to win more silverware at Real Madrid, including three successive CL titles. Allowing him to join Los Blancos is likely to go down as one of the biggest transfer blunders Die Roten has made in recent history.
