Takeaways as Bayern Munich survive late scare from Hoffenheim
Bayern Munich edge out TSG Hoffenheim 4-3 in the third round of the DFB Pokal at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich barely escaped their home match against Hoffenheim in the DFB Pokal after the away side made a late push in the match, and had a few chances to score an equalizer. The attack for Bayern was lethal and created several great chances resulting in four goals, but the defense did not match their performance, shipping three goals in very poor performance. There were also multiple own goals in the match, one for each side, so the defensive woes were not just limited to Bayern.
Those own goals were the first two goals scored in the game. Bayern’s Jerome Boateng opened the scoring at the wrong end in the eighth minute. Five minutes later, Hoffenheim’s Benjamin Hubner returned the favour by putting the ball past his goalkeeper. Bayern scored the next three goals to make it 4-1. Goals were scored by Thomas Muller (20′) and Robert Lewandowski twice (36′ and 80′). The away side followed with two goals by Moanes Dabbur in the 82nd minute and 92nd minute.
The win here takes Bayern to the DFB Pokal quarterfinals, and at this point, Bayern has to be considered favorites for the competition. All the other top four teams in the Bundesliga have been eliminated, and with the team’s depth and quality, Die Roten should go on to lift the DFB Cup for the second season in a row. Here are four takeaways from the game.
