A permanent coach
The previous full-time coach for Bayern Munich was Niko Kovac, and he had a very turbulent time as head coach. His first year was rough, especially the initial phase of his time in Munich. The Croatian’s coaching style divided the fanbase from a very early time. Even with these troubles, he managed to lead the team to the domestic double, winning the League on the last day, and clinching the DFB Pokal final against RB Leipzig.
This season continued to a rough start and continued to bring scrutiny to his job security. After a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, the Bayern hierarchy felt it was time to move on from Kovac and replaced him with Hansi Flick. Since Flick’s appointment, the team has recovered well, producing some very memorable performances including a 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. The players have also responded to his coaching style with several coming out and giving their vote of confidence for the coach. Flick has a very good chance of getting the job permanently next summer.
But there are other candidates to be looked at, most notably Erik Ten Hag from Ajax. Ten Hag led Ajax last season to the Champions League semi-final by playing entertaining and attacking football. This was very reminiscent of Bayern under Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola and is a wish of the Bayern fans to see again.
If Flick is not the man for the job, Ten Hag should be the priority as he has shown that he can develop young players and take a team far into the Champions League. The head coaching decision in the summer of 2020 will definitely grab the attention of Bayern fans and will have greater implications in the years to come.
