Sandro Wagner

Rekordmeister has been blessed with some fine strikers in the past decade. Bayern secured the deal of the century by signing Lewandowski from Dortmund on a free transfer. The Polish striker has been scoring goals for fun in the past five seasons.

Bayern rarely had to look for a backup striker due to Lewandowski’s impeccable fitness and availability of versatile forwards in the squad. However, the club did decide to provide some cover for Lewandowski in January 2018 by signing Sandro Wagner from Hoffenheim.

This transfer also had a feel-good factor as Wagner returned to his boyhood club after 12 years. Jupp Heynckes utilised him effectively, handing him 18 appearances in the second half of the season. Wagner repaid the faith shown by Heynckes by scoring nine league goals.

Things started to go downhill for Wagner after the arrival of Niko Kovac. The German striker struggled for playing time under the Croatian manager. He eventually left the club to join Tianjin Teda in January 2019. It was a poor transfer for Die Roten as Wagner lasted only 12 months at the club.
