Lukas Mai

There was a lot of interest from different Bundesliga clubs in Lukas Mai during the summer transfer window. Bayern Munich decided against sending him on loan and extended his contract till 2022. As expected, the decision to stay in Bavaria has not been beneficial for Mai.

The 19-year-old defender has been playing for reserves throughout this season. He is yet to make an appearance for the first team despite the number of injuries to the first team center-backs this season. Mai did travel with the squad on a few occasions, but he didn’t get opportunities in those games.

At Bayern, Mai is considered as one of the best young prospects coming from the academy. Since making debut for the first team in 2018, things have not gone as expected for Mai at Bayern. A permanent transfer is not the option at the moment, but he needs to get minutes at the senior level to develop into a top-class center-back.

Bayern has struggled to give him game time even during an injury crisis, so they should look to arrange a loan spell for the young defender. Adrian Fein is developing at a faster rate in Hamburg. Mai should also look to get a loan move like Fein to take the next step in his development.
