Alphonso Davies establishes himself at Bayern

Alphonso Davies came with much fanfare at Bayern Munich in January after agreeing terms with the club in the summer window of 2018. The Canadian winger was then MLS’s record sale before Newcastle United broke the record in January to sign Miguel Almiron.

Davies’ initial six months were tough as he made only six appearances. The 19-year-old winger had to play with the reserves team to keep himself fit and continue his development. Despite limited playing time in the first team, he did manage to get his first goal for the club last season.

It was looking likely that Davies will have to play for reserves regularly in the 2019/20 season. However, the injury crisis in defense opened a place for Davies in the team. He had to settle for the left-back position, allowing David Alaba to play in central defense.

Davies had no complaints about this role switch and he seamlessly adapted in the left-back position. He was one of the star performers for Bayern in November and December. He is solid defensively and has the pace to burn on the counter. There is still a lot of scope of improvement in his game, but by accident, Bayern may have unearthed a quality player in his unusual playing position.
