Bayern Munich: Takeaways from first half of the season
Kingsley Coman fails to step up
Bayern Munich decided to bide farewell to their star attacking duo of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery last summer. They couldn’t add Leroy Sane to the squad, ending up with Ivan Perisic and Philippe Coutinho to fill the void left by Robbery. Along with these signings, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman were also expected to step up this season.
Serge Gnabry has done well in the first half of the season with eleven goals and seven assists across all competitions. Coman meanwhile has failed to improve his game this season. The French winger currently has three goals and two assists across all competitions. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
The stats can be deceptive, but they are not in Coman’s case. He has struggled to influence the games positively whenever given an extended run in the starting lineup. His decision making in the final third is underwhelming. This often hurts the team as he fails to find the right pass or cross from a promising position.
To add more misery to Coman’s limitation, he suffered another injury at the start of December. Die Roten has shown a lot of faith in Coman’s ability, so it is time for him to step up and put in some serious performances during the second half of the season.
