Bayern hammer Dortmund in Der Klassiker

The year started with Bayern being nine points behind Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. Die Roten did retain the title, but the most satisfying performance of the season came against their arch-rivals at Allianz Arena.

Both teams needed the win to stay in the hunt for the title. Bayern had the advantage as they were hosting the Der Klassiker, and extra motivation to get one over Dortmund after suffering defeat at Signal Iduna Park earlier in the season.

Niko Kovac’s men went all guns blazing into the game and demolished Dortmund. The defending champions scored five goals in the game, and it could have been easily more. After this win, Bayern was in driving seat of the title race.

Bayern went on to clinch another big win over Dortmund in November, but the win in April was much more significant. It was Kovac’s first tactical masterclass in a big game. Die Roten showed the character and came back in the title race in an astonishing manner. Winning Der Klassiker is always special, but when the stakes are high as they were in this game, it makes such a big win even sweeter.
