Holding Midfield Role

In the sweeper role, Lothar Matthaus makes it to our dream team. He holds the record for the most World Cup matches played by a single player and is the highest capped German player of all time.

Besides a Ballon dÓr to his name in 1990 for his performance in West Germany’s World Cup-winning campaign, Matthaus won seven Bundesliga and three DFB-Pokal titles for Bayern. A complete midfielder, Matthaus possessed the ability to dribble past opponents in the center and half-spaces with a knack for testing the goalkeeper from a distance.

Matthaus started playing the sweeper role later in his career. He excelled in this role and became one of the best holding midfielders in football. In our All-time XI, Matthaus will occupy the sweeper position. In his book named Yo soy el Diego (via Asian Age), Diego Maradona reckoned Matthaus as the best rival he has ever faced.
