Lucas Hernandez

The Bavarians smashed their transfer record when they announced the signing of Lucas Hernandez on a five-year contract from Atletico Madrid in March 2019, reportedly, for €80 million.

In Hernandez, Bayern have got a World Cup and Europa League winner (2018) and a 2016 UEFA Champions League finalist. Hernandez is a dynamic defender who primarily operates in central defense but can also do a good job in the left-back role. He has the pace to chase down attackers when his team is vulnerable to counter-attack with the propensity to win the ball through accurate tackles.

The six-feet tall defender is also good in winning the aerial duels. He started last two Bundesliga games, winning all the three aerial duels contested during these games. His arrival in the team seems to have upgraded Bayern’s defensive structure which is evident from just one goal that Bayern have conceded in their last two league games compared to two goals conceded in their opening fixture against Hertha.

Furthermore, Hernandez is great at playing out from the back and likes to find space in the middle of the park. He is also able to bypass the midfield and find a teammate in the attacking third with precise passes. He has been involved in 173 passes from open play in the Bundesliga so far with a success rate of 94.8%. (Stats courtesy: bundesliga.com)

The France international will be a vital signing for Bayern Munich. Kovac will be able to experiment with different systems and use Hernandez’s versatility effectively. Hernandez can be the key to unlock Bayern’s potential against Europe’s biggest clubs. A strong and dynamic defender, Lucas Hernandez is on his way to be a part of the backbone of the squad.

Bayern gets a solid 8/10 for sealing this deal.
