Last week I went all in, predicting a 4-1 win for the hosts. I was wrong. But in some ways I was right. Bayern could have realistically defeated their visitors by a significant margins had they finished their chances and eliminated two gifted goals.

This is going to be a tough match for the Bavarians, there’s no doubt. But a win is still definitely possible. Statistically, Real Madrid are weaker at home than away this season, so a victory for Bayern is just as feasible in this second leg. I expect a tough, hard fought game. If the boys in red eliminate their defensive mistakes and convert their chances when they come, they’ll leave the Santiago Bernabeu with a shock win and begin making plans for a trip to Kiev.

As I mentioned before, I felt like Bayern played well in the first leg. They were sloppy, yes. They made some big mistakes, for sure. According to Opta’s expected goals (xG) statistic, Bayern outplayed Real Madrid 2.5 – 0.7.

The possession was in the German squad’s favor. The shots were tilted towards Bayern as well. What was not there was the finishing. Ribery, Lewandowski and Muller all had chances that they would normally take advantage of that amounted to nothing.

The injury to Robben so early in the match threw everything off and by the time they got their wits about them, Boateng was gone, as well. With a full three substitutes, who knows how Jupp would have been able to get Bayern back in the game? I’ve felt it since the moment FCB drew Real, and I’m not giving up the feeling now.

“Don’t stop believing!”, as the great philosphers of Journey said. Bayern breaks the Real voodoo in dramatic fashion!

Real Madrid 2 – Bayern Munich 3. Bayern to advance on away goals.

Bayern Munich were very good in patches last week and deserved a better result than what they got. The Bavarians can still go through, but they will need an enormous performance from each and every player. Bayern will also be hoping that they are efficient in the final third at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The German Champions need to look at how Juventus performed against Real Madrid in Madrid. They have looked vulnerable at home this season even in Champions League too. I think it will be a close game and away goals will ultimately come into the picture.
