5) Sebastian Rudy (previously: 6th)

There was a point in the season where Sebastian Rudy could have easily found himself at the very top of this list. Having joined from Hoffenheim on a free transfer over the summer, not many expected much from the German midfielder.

However, after an impressive start to the ’17-18 season, it looked like Rudy might just have been the best signing Bayern made. He was one of a few players who was actually much better under manager Carlo Ancelotti than under his successor Jupp Heynckes.

Alas, when Heynckes returned as Bayern Munich manager Rudy’s importance to the team declined. With Javi Martinez’s return to defensive midfield, the need for another deep midfielder like Rudy is mitigated.

That doesn’t mean Rudy hasn’t been a good signing. In fact, he’s been a great addition to the team. He’s a solid defensive midfielder with a supremely impressive passing range and is adept at winning the ball and maintaining possession in midfield.

But under the current coach and his tactics, Sebastian Rudy isn’t the most important of players. On top of that, Bayern’s several other summer signings have been just a little more impressive.

Putting this list together was extremely difficult, and Rudy could have found himself much higher up the list. The deep-lying midfielder just loses points, though, for not being an important player under Jupp Heynckes and not offering as much going forward as Bayern’s other signings.
