Bayern Munich have joined the long list of top European clubs interested in signing Frenkie De Jong from Ajax next summer.
Frenkie De Jong is touted as the next midfield sensation to come out of the Netherlands. A product of the Willem II acadaemy, De Jong is now trying to become a regular fixture in Ajax’s first team. The 20-year-old has been followed regularly by top European clubs, including Bayern Munich.
In a report published by Dutch outlet VI, Bayern Munich just recently joined the long list of De Jong’s admirers. If the Bavarians are serious about signing the young talent, though, they will face stiff competition from other elite European clubs, as Manchester City and Chelsea are also very interested in De Jong.
De Jong has the talent to play many roles in midfield. The Dutchman has an eye for key passes in the final third. He can also be deployed in either a box-to-box or holding midfield position.
The German Champions have already talked about a cooperation with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven to develop young players. It is not surprising that Bayern scouts are keeping an eye on De Jong, but a summer move seems very unlikely. De Jong recently admitted that he wants more first team minutes to continue his development. He is unlikely to get that at Bayern as there are already a lot of midfielders in the first team squad.
However, it will not be surprising if Bayern Munich make a move for him in a few years. The Bavarians have made it known they want to sign more younger players to help cope with the inflation of the modern market. Joshua Kimmich is the product of this policy, and he is slowly establishing himself into one of Europe’s best right-backs. De Jong is an exciting talent, but right now Munich is not the right destination for his development.
