Bayern Munich dominate Augsburg at home in their return from the latest international break, set themselves up for an excellent finish to the Hinrunde.

Manager Grade

Jupp Heynckes — A

Given the several players Bayern Munich are missing due to injury, Jupp didn’t have much choice in his starting XI. However, the few decisions he did have to make paid off well. Namely, playing Arturo Vidal alongside Javi Martinez proved an excellent decision, and featuring Juan Bernat at left attacking-mid paid off as well.

Player Grades

GK, Sven Ulreich — B

A relatively quiet night for the German goalkeeper. He came up big in the first half to keep out an excellently placed free-kick, but had little to do for the remainder of the match as Bayern were the definition of dominant.

DEF, Rafinha — C+

The Brazilian-German did his job against Augsburg, filling in for David Alaba on the left side of defense. Not much more needs to be said about his game.

DEF, Mats Hummels — B+

Bayern’s best central defender since joining the club last season, Hummels was once again solid in the Bavarian backline. He seems to have taken his game to another level over the calendar year and has a fair argument to call himself one of the world’s best.

DEF, Niklas Sule — B

Like his defensive partner, Sule looked calm and collected in defense the entire match. Also like Hummels, should have done better with his headers to put himself on the scoresheet. He did, however, get the assist for Vidal’s opener.

DEF, Joshua Kimmich — A-

Bayern’s player of the month for both September and October, Kimmich showed he is still in fine form for the Bavarians. Did his defensive duties well, but it was his offensive contribution that — as usual — set him apart. His cross for Lewandowski’s second was inch-perfect and a wonderful example of how deadly Kimmich can be going forward.

MID, Arturo Vidal — A+

A classic performance from the Chilean. He grabbed Bayern’s opener with a tricky finish, assisted Robert Lewandowski for his first and nearly scored another — his header just hitting the crossbar after a lovely James cross. Bayern’s Warrior proved he still has what it takes to be an unstoppable force in midfield.

MID, Javi Martinez — B

Bayern’s defensive midfield anchor did exactly what was expected of him. Sitting right ahead of the defensive line, Javi ensured Augsburg did little going forward and contributed well to the Bayern attack.

MID, Juan Bernat — B-

Deployed as a left-sided attacking-midfielder in Kingsley Coman’s absence, Juan Bernat’s return to the Bayern Munich squad was actually fairly impressive. Given Bayern’s shortage of natural wingers, perhaps Heynckes has unique plans for the Spaniard.

MID, James Rodriguez — A-

The cornerstone around which Bayern Munich built all their attack, James was brilliant against Augsburg. He created several chances, and it was his free-kick that led to die Roten’s first. That he ended the match without any assists is not of his own accord, but can rather be blamed on his teammates’ lack of finishing.

MID, Arjen Robben — C+

One of Bayern’s less impressive players, that’s mostly due to his team’s good play than his lack of it. By no means a bad game from the Dutchman, just a quiet one.

FWD, Robert Lewandowski — A

Staying in Munich during this past international break seems an excellent decision from the Polish striker. He put away his chances with deadly efficiency, once again looking like the best number nine in the world and ending the game with a well-deserved brace.

Subs

DEF, David Alaba — N/A

Replacing Juan Bernat but dropping to left-back, Alaba made little mark on the match.

MID, Corentin Tolisso, MID, Sebastian Rudy — N/A

Coming on late, Bayern’s two newest midfielders joined the match with little to do.
