4. The impending appointment of Julian Nagelsmann

While all the other points have dealt with implications for this season, Heynckes’ appointment also has one implication that goes beyond this campaign. Bayern Munich do, in fact, plan on going after young Julian Nagelsmann.

Although nothing is yet certain, all the signs point to Nagelsmann as Heynckes replacement. Jupp only signed on for the remainder of the season. Essentially, he’s a stop-gap. So why not go ahead and bring in Nagelsmann immediately? Well, there are a few reasons.

First, he is still under contract at Hoffenheim and will be until 2021. It’s unlikely for the club to release him from his contract in the middle of seasonal play. Convincing them to let him go in the summer will be tough as well, but much more doable than it would have been if Bayern wanted him to leave immediately.

Second, Bayern’s board wants to monitor his success over the course of this season. Will he collapse under the pressure of European competition and the need to do well domestically? Or will he rise up to the occasion and have another successful season with tougher competition and a significantly weakened squad? All signs point to the latter, but a collapse is still possible.

Finally, it’s a much smarter move to bring in Heynckes because he has no future plans with the club. If (when) Nagelsmann takes over, he’ll be doing so with long-term plans in mind. Asking him to take over mid-season and turn results around with a group of players he has never worked with would be completely unfair.

Instead, the board opted to bring in an incredibly successful manager who is completely familiar with the club and many of its players. They wanted someone who can salvage this season then calmly step to the side. Jupp Heynckes is the perfect man to do just that.

Make no mistake though, Bayern Munich see Julian Nagelsmann as their future manager just as much as Bayern fans see Joshua Kimmich as the future captain. At this point, it’s all but written in stone.
