Number One: Leading Bayern Munich to their historic treble

There really was no other option. Although he won the World Cup just a year after lifting the Champions League trophy in 2013, Lahm’s greatest achievement came not with Germany, but his true love: Bayern Munich.

Lahm was born in Munich, raised in Munich, has lived in Munich his whole life. Basically, Philipp Lahm is Bayern Munich. That’s why the club’s historic ’12-13 season is so significant for him.

Not only did Bayern finally once again lift the Champions League trophy, but they also claimed both the Bundesliga title and the DFB cup. Bayern were utterly dominant for the whole season. They defeated Spanish giants Barcelona 7-0 on aggregate and similarly defeated both Arsenal and Juventus on their way to the Champions League final. After fending off German rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, Bayern then defeated them in the all-German Champions League final.

Much like with the Germany squad of 2014, Lahm was a central figure of the treble winning Bayern side. Not only was he the club’s captain, but also one of their best, most consistent performers.

He and Bayern capped off a phenomenal season in a phenomenal way: lifting the Champions League trophy. After experiencing several disappointing endings–including the heartbreaking final loss just a year earlier–Lahm was finally a champion of Europe with his club.

It was a moment that both fan and player will always remember. Just like Lahm, it is completely intertwined with the history of the club and will never be forgotten.
