Number Two: Leading Die Mannschaft to their fourth World Cup victory

Not many people have the privilege of saying they’ve won a World Cup. Even fewer can say that they have captained a team that won the trophy. That’s certainly an elite club, but one of which Lahm is a member.

The 2014 World Cup was one for the ages, perhaps one of the greatest in the tournament’s history. Germany–led by captain Lahm–was dominant throughout the entirety of the cup and deserved their win.

The 7-1 victory of host nation Brazil will go down as one of the most shocking defeats in World Cup history. And the final, although not as spectacular as the previous match, provided a top notch ending to a great tournament.

Germany’s success throughout the tournament cannot be entirely credited to one player; the whole squad performed admirably. However, much of it can be given to their steadfast captain. Lahm’s play for Germany during the cup was what you would expect from the skipper–rock solid. He never failed to give his best and inspired his fellow countrymen to do the same.

This win undoubtedly meant more to Lahm than many could know. After the tournament ended he decided to retire from international soccer, knowing that there was nothing greater he could achieve with Die Mannschaft. After six international tournament finals, Lahm had finally done it. He won the World Cup and forever established himself in the history books of international soccer.
