Number Three: Holding his head high after losing the Champions League in Munich

As a Bayern fan, the 2012 Champions League final is one that I prefer not to remember. In front of their home crowd and in the perfect position to achieve European glory, Bayern Munich fell at the hands of a determined Chelsea side.

The game was a roller-coasters of emotions. For most of the match it seemed that Die Roten would walk away with the victory, particularly after Thomas Muller’s late opener.

However, the fates had something much different in mind for Bayern, who did not get the fairytale ending to the season that they would have desperately wished for.

If this disappointing ending was good for anything though, it would be how it showed the true character of Bayern Munich’s captain.

While every other player in red lay distraught on the floor, Lahm never lost his dignity and consistently held his head high. He was the one shining beacon of red amidst a celebratory sea of blue.

May 19, 2012 may not have been the night that saw Bayern Munich win a great Champions League final at home, but it was the night that Philipp Lahm proved his place among the great captains of the history of the beautiful game.
