Bayern Munich bow out of Champions league after suffering a 4-2 defeat against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The scoreline is flattering as Bayern Munich fought brilliantly to comeback into the tie. Bayern  forced the game into extra time in which Madrid came on top. The Bavarians are knocked out of the Champions league by a Spanish team for the fourth consecutive season.

Carlo Ancelotti fielded the strongest eleven against Real Madrid in order to turnover the 2-1 deficit from first leg. The defensive duo Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels made it for the game despite not completely recovering from injuries. Robert Lewandowski lead the line after being out of last two games due to injury.

The Bavarians started the game strongly as they showed their intentions from the minute one. Despite being the away team at Bernabeu, the Bavarians were dominating possession. The first good chance of the game came at the 8th minute when David Alaba slided a pass for Franck Ribery into the box. Ribery then squared the ball for Thiago Alcantara, whose shot was blocked by Marcelo just in front of the goal. The rebound was hit ferociously into the sidenetting by Arjen Robben.

Bayern were not able to capitalise on the strong start as the home side came back strongly after seeing out the nervy 20 minutes of the games. Real Madrid almost got the lead at home when Dani Carvajal’s long range shot was tipped away by Manuel Neuer. The Los Blancos came close again when Sergio Ramos almost scored the opener with powerful drive as his shot was blocked on the line by Boateng.

Ancelotti’s men were all over the place after a strong start to game. The most disappointing aspect of the half for Bayern came from the left hand side. Ribery was drifting inside providing acres of space for Alaba to go forward. However the Austrian was poor with his deliveries despite getting into string position. The first half ended with Madrid looking threatening on counter while Bayern looking poor in the final third.

Madrid started the second half positively as they quickly created a goalscoring chance. Isco’s thunderous strike from the edge of the box missed the target by inches. Robben had a shot cleared off the line from Marcelo after some neat work by Alaba on the left flank. There was finally a goal in the game at the 50 minute mark when Casemiro brought down Robben in the box. Lewandowski converted the penalty and providing the German club a lifeline in this tie.

Bayern Munich were in the ascendancy after the first goal. They were looking more threathening in the final third. They were creating chances after chances as they were looking to find the second goal which would put them in commanding seat. Arturo Vidal came close when his acrobatic effort went over the goal after a delightful dink over the defence from Robben.

Real Madrid soaked all the pressure from Bayern and finally got the equaliser with 15 minutes to go. Casemiro delivered a cross from the edge of the box which was headed powerfully by Cristiano Ronaldo. However Bayern’s lead was restored quickly in a couple of minutes as Sergio Ramos poked the ball into his own goal. As things were standing, the game was going into extra time.

Then came the sending off Arturo Vidal in 83rd minute which swung the game in favour of Real Madrid completely. The Chilean was on a yellow card, but went onto win the ball from Marco Asensio with a neat crunching tackle. However the referee didn’t find the tackle clean and dismissed Vidal with a second yellow card.

Bayern went into the extra time, but a man short didn’t allow them to attack as they would have like to.  Real Madrid kept on piling up the pressure on Bayern in the first half of extra time. Neuer kept his team in hunt with two brilliant saves.

However they finally conceded at the end of the first period of extra time. Ramos delivered a cross for Ronaldo who controlled it with chest and finished emphatically past Neuer. The replays suggested that the Portuguese was in offside position at the time ball was delivered. Madrid were level on the night and led by a goal on aggregate.

Bayern players looked knackered, specially Hummels and Boateng as they were playing with injuries. The home team strengthened their grip on the game after the play resumed as Ronaldo scored his third on the night. Marcelo dribbled past Bayern’s defence and then squared the ball for Ronaldo to complete his hattrick.

The night got more miserable for Bayern Munich when Asensio scored the fourth goal for Real Madrid. They hit Bayern on counter as everyone had committed forward in search of goal. Asensio dribbled past couple of players and then slotted it past Neuer.

Bayern Munich’s journey in Champions League ended on a poor note. The team fought brilliantly. However Real Madrid were better team across both legs, but the officiating was very poor in the second leg, which hurt Bayern Munich badly.
